Gig contract checklist: what to include
By BandManager · 1 min read ·
A gig sealed over text messages is a gig at risk. A short, clear contract protects the band and the venue. This guide is general guidance, not legal advice.
What it should include
- The parties: the name or company name of the band and of the venue or promoter.
- Date, place, arrival time, soundcheck time and length of the set.
- The fee or financial terms, and who pays taxes and expenses.
- How and when payment is made: before, on the night or later.
- Technical and hospitality riders as annexes.
- Cancellation terms and what happens in case of force majeure.
- Who handles performance rights.
What to watch when signing
That the financial terms match what was discussed and that the payment method is clear. That the cancellation clause covers both sides. And that the rider annex says exactly what you need, so there are no surprises on the night.
When the deal is by email
If the venue does not want a contract, leave a written confirmation email with date, time, fee and conditions, and ask them to reply "agreed". It is better than nothing.
Frequently asked questions
Is a contract required?
Not always, but it is advisable for any show with money involved. It serves as proof if there is a disagreement.
Who drafts the contract?
Either the venue or the band can. What matters is reading it carefully before signing.
Do I need a lawyer?
For simple one-night agreements, a clear template is usually enough. For tours, exclusivity or high fees, consult a professional.
